Carbs, Gluten and the Croutons
This week I'm sharing a few thoughts that came to me from an incident. Although, they may seem disconnected, they aren't for me.
Hello friend,
Today, I’m just sharing some random thoughts about living with celiac disease.
This post of for everyone affected by a medical condition that affects one’s diet. Navigating emotions in such situations is incredibly hard. At times, it is easy to dismiss it as humour or sarcasm. At other times, it hits hard.
An incident
So I walk into a restaurant, and they say “It’s all you can eat. Everything is celiac safe here, except croutons. We even have gluten-free croutons.” Excited! I walk to the salad bar and gluten-free croutons are placed right next to the toxic croutons. A couple of tongs lay there which people were using interchangeably. But you know, they can’t stop people from accidentally using tongs across. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Being a pretentious hipster
I am thankful for the gluten-free fad diets because they popularised the idea of gluten-free foods. They increased the demand for gluten-free foods and gave way for supermarkets to make business sense of gluten-free aisles. But it absolutely infuriates me when people think I am being a hipster for “choosing” gluten-free products. 🙄
All that is carbs, is not gluten
For those who think a gluten-free diet is healthy and follow it, let me tell you it’s not true. You can still end up consuming a lot of carbs without eating gluten. Don’t believe me, eh? Try white rice: no gluten, all carbs. If you eat gluten-free bread, cereal, donuts, etc. all have carbs and sugars. Gluten isn’t carbs, my friend.
A gluten-free diet doesn’t make a difference unless you are intolerant, allergic or celiac. If you aren’t any of those, you’re simply spending more for the food that has the same affect on you.
