Our love for food
Our love for food is great. You know what is greater? Our love for people we care about. That is what we need to remind ourselves of in awkward situations.
I recently helped a friend move. I was the only one with a driver’s license, and someone had to drive the U-Haul. Usually, after you help someone move they buy you dinner. It’s an unsaid custom for people around here. My shoulder had a muscular injury so I couldn’t life or move anything for my friends. So yes, all I did was drive their stuff from one place to the other, and they wanted to buy me dinner.
I didn’t do it for dinner. I did it because they are my friends, and I like to help people. I also like that people are grateful. Stand-up comedians have made jokes about friends helping to move for a couple of slices of pizza and beer. But that’s not why any of us do it, do we?
Sorry, if it feels like I am digressing from the story. The point was that when they were deciding what place I was comfortable eating at. I was just nodding or shaking my head. Eventually, I sighed and told them that I didn’t want any food in exchange, but let’s just sit and chat over a coffee. I drove to the nearest coffee shop, got a coffee and we just talked about their life, my life and where we connect. It was great! Later I wate one of my pre-prepped meals when I came home :)
